I talk to the trees.
In honor of "Mamma Mia!" sucking a big donkey dong (the poster for it, in a little box at the bottom, alerts concerned viewers that the film depicts tobacco consumption, yet does nothing to warn you that Pierce Brosnan sings three solos), I was assigned a piece about five memorably awful moments in movie musicals. Obviously this is not a definitive list:

I don't dislike Mame for itself, I just never liked the music all that much. There are so many versions of Mame, that this one slides in underneath.

Well, Angela Lansbury did ok on Broadway, but Lucy sucked.

I am thinking Angela did more than ok - she is for very very many, the primary Mame.

At my request, my grandmother took me to see Sgt. Pepper when I was visiting her in MA over the summer. She liked musicals, so where's the harm, right?
We had a great time...she hummed along while I tried to ignore the icky teen girls behind me swooning over Frampton. IN 1979!!! WTF?!
The Maxwell's Silver Hammer bit kinda scared me.
Same grandmother ended up buying me the double-album soundtrack later that summer.

Wow, is Mamma Mia as bad as "The Apple?"

I am very sad about this fact.

As someone who has long trumpeted the call for the musical form to expand beyond traditionally defined "musicals", the bad movies hit me very hard. Especially something like the Apple or even Don't Stop The Music, which both try to make a musical using non-traditional musical theater music.

But, if there is a silver lining, hollywood kept trying to integrate musicality within its films, and eventually that led to movies of the Flashdance/Footloose route that kept music alive within films until the time came when musical form became relevant again.

It should be noted that "From Justin to Kelly" is leading the "what's the worst musical of all time?" poll on that page.

Not sure why, but Justin Guarini always reminds me of somebody's grandmother's advice to Michelle Obama--never wear pearls unless your teeth match them perfectly.

I love "The Apple" so much, that despite the fact that I haven't seen it for 15 years, I had to go out and buy it. Having done this over a year ago, I haven't managed to make myself watch it again. :)

And what -- no "Skidoo"? No "The Return of Captain Invincible"?

Ohmydeargodflashback.

I saw "Can't Stop the Music" in Germany when I was 13. We were in our hotel for the evening and my brother and I were sharing a room. He was somewhere else (I don't recall where) and I had the movie channel on. It must have been ChannelGayGay because I saw "Victor/Victoria" and "Can't Stop the Music"

All I remember of the latter is "I Love You to Death" - I was simultaneously aroused and repulsed by it. Hairy man: A+. The rest of it: subconscious timebomb waiting to be activated.

Thank you so much.

I saw a musical (for lack of a better word) called Cinderlle 2000. It was sort of soft core porn musical. It was so bad, by the end of the first song, half the theater had left.

I wish people would stop talking about the whole Donna Summer/"Coming For You" thing, because if it keeps up, some swiny lawyer at Universal Music will indeed sue, and in all likelihood, rather than fight the suit, MGM will just yank THE APPLE from circulation. And that would make me and Mr. Topps sad.

The only possible disagreement on my part is whether "The Apple" or "Dr. Doolittle" should have been at the top of the list.

I always like reading your takes on movies, Dave. Need More!

Speaking of musicals, I just got a look at this Joss Whedon oddity called Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog. Starring Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion. Talk about bad singers! But this thing is pretty amusing.

Hey man,

glad to have SOMETHING to read from you about movies. Have you gotten any offers for full out movie reviews yet? A lot of people have already said it but you REALLY have a true following of people that love your movie reviews. I feel like back when i didn't have your movie reviews now, reading the same shit in every avenue of media and then getting to the theater and they were all full of self-righteous crap. PLEASE do movie reviews again!

Thank God you included The Apple on that list - I had my hand over the mouse button, about to click through to the list, thinking "please say The Apple, please say The Apple", and YES!

The mattress dancing crew and Shake in his gold thong broke the boundaries of awesome and never looked back.
